How was your journey to work today? Well I'm one of those mad fools who like to live as far away from the centre of London as possible but even so typically it's an hour door-to-door which isn't so bad and includes a head-clearing walk from Canon Street - my choice as I hate the Tube. However, today I had to get myself over to Heathrow for a 9.30am meeting. Therefore my day began with a jaunt on the Heathrow Express to the Hilton Hotel at terminal four. Good thing was that I was back at my desk an hour after the meeting ended as it's easy to get from Heathrow to Barbican via Paddington and the Tube.
What was the first thing you did when you arrived? When I got to the office the first thing I did was go and say hi to the team. I guess you would have expected me to have to check my e-mails, but as all managers and above have BlackBerry handhelds I was able to clear the backlog when I was on the Heathrow Express. The first person I talked with was… Hmm, tricky one as the whole team was there and I generally just said hello. I did get into a chat with Kenny straight away to let him know how successful the meeting with MORI was as he is on that client's account with me.
What did your to-do list look like today? Other than the meeting it was a list of e-mails that needed writing and sending to get various actions in motion. I have some big writing projects on but as I was making use of our work from home policy the next day I was saving all of that for then.
In the morning I… had a great meeting with my client and MORI. Heathrow may seem like an odd venue, but the client is based in Paris and this allowed them to fly in and fly straight out. The survey we are working on is very exciting. Not only is it the largest survey we have ever worked on with a client, but we are also doing it in conjunction with a national paper so we are hoping for an extremely high quality piece of coverage from it. It is also being done not just as a piece of PR collateral but as market research for the client into a new but potentially vast market within which they operate. I'm having to be vague about the details because we might jeopardise the survey otherwise but I've got really high hopes for this one!
What was your lunch break like? Personally I like to eat lunch at my desk reading a newspaper. Yes, we always read the papers each morning before 9am so that we're up to speed on what's going on and can spot stories for or about our clients, but it's not quite the same as being able to sit down and read through the paper properly. Maybe it's a bit of the ex-journalist in me but I hate not being up to speed on what's going on in the world.
What was the major non work related story in your team today? I guess that would have to be two of the team heading off to Glastonbury. God knows what state they're going to be in on Monday...
What did you learn today? How MORI works – a bit dull I know but there you go!
At 4pm I… finally got invite e-mails out to national journalists regarding RIM's earnings announcement on Thursday. A bit later than I intended but I just wanted to get something out to them so that I can follow-up on the phone.
What was the most bizarre thing that happened to you today? Joining in a conversation in French! My language skills are limited at best, but I can understand French and a bit of German so when two of my clients were nattering away in French about some goings-on within their company in the UK which is relevant to what we do I couldn't help but make some comment in English. My client laughed and said "so you can understand French". As you can tell, very proud of myself!
