Life as a Hotwire graduate, by David Ross-Tomlin

I remember my first day walking into the office at Hotwire and being ready to near enough keel over with nerves, worried about all the different challenges that lay ahead, whether or not I’d settle quickly and if I’d get to grips with my job and all it entailed.

I shouldn’t have worried, because by the end of my first week I felt really settled and like I’d been here much longer.  I was already knocking out press briefing books as if I’d been doing it my whole life!

One thing that helped me get started at Hotwire was the time that my colleagues took to explain my clients and the work expected of me.  Since day one all of my managers have ensured that I was as much a part of the team as anyone else and that I was given ownership and variation in my work, something that is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job.

As part of the telecoms team at Hotwire, I’ve learned more about mobile phones than I thought was humanly possible, but I’ve also learnt a great deal about interacting with the media and clients in an industry I previously had no experience of.  I’ve developed good media relation skills, something which the company has really pushed me to develop.

Since starting at Hotwire, I’ve achieved some strong pieces of coverage for my clients, which I have found fulfilling.  Coverage has appeared in everything from leading trade publications such as Mobile Media and Mobile Entertainment, to national news publications like The Business, and then my personal highlight, the Financial Times.

The thing with Hotwire though, is it’s not all work. There’s very much a ‘work hard, play hard’ attitude here, and that’s helped me to settle quickly, probably more than anything else. Everyone at Hotwire gets along, and there’s a brilliant social side to the job. It’s not uncommon to spend most Fridays after work enjoying a few well deserved tipples, and it’s nice that we work in an environment where people can go out and enjoy each other’s company.

It’s not the weekend yet (for me anyway), so right now I’m working for my clients on the telecoms industry’s biggest event of the year, 3GSM World Congress. I’m really enjoying the challenge it’s proving to be, and so far I’ve been involved in securing a massive byline for its annual directory, arranging briefings for clients and coming up with cool new ideas for campaigns at the show.  It’s going to be a busy few months, but then that’s one of the things I enjoy most about Hotwire… there’s never a dull moment!
