In 2010 who will have responsibility for a company's brand and communications strategy? Today, ownership is generally divided between two distinct roles: the marketing director and the corporate communications director. However, the growth of digital media channels and the fragmentation of the media is blurring the lines between the disciplines and subsequently these two roles. Hotwire would like to invite you to a seminar called The Battle for the Empty Chair. On 26 April 2007 we will present our research on the impact the proliferation of digital media channels has on the future of an organisation's marketing communications.
Traditional advertising is in decline, with audiences fragmenting and consuming more media via digital and mobile channels. The traditional 30 second advert is increasingly being mixed and supplemented by direct engagement with audiences via blogs, social networking, podcasting and user generated videos. This is a critical subject for us in PR as many of the new communications channels lend themselves to the editorial and relationship style of the PR function. We have conducted pan-European research into the changing marketing communications environment to explore the following questions:
- • With the change in marketing channels and the marketing mix, who ultimately will own the relationship with the customer?
- • What will this mean for the roles of marketing director and corporate communications director?
- • Will such a change affect the traditional make up of the board (traditionally a role held by the marketing director), where ownership of talking to the customer determines 'the seat on the board'?
This is a very pertinent subject to everyone in marketing and we will have industry spokespeople contributing their views and opinions. We believe this will be an evening of extremely interesting and useful debate.
